The tasks of an airport fire department are varied and demanding. They can be summarized as follows:
- Aircraft fire protection in accordance with current ICAO guidelines for category 6 and higher on request
- Aircraft recovery and technical assistance after an aircraft accident within the airport premises
- Fire protection of buildings and technical assistance for the entire airport site as a recognized site fire department.
The Airport Fire Service of Bodensee-Airport Friedrichshafen has been a recognized plant fire brigade since 20 April 2001.
