Flughafen Friedrichshafen GmbH protects and promotes biodiversity on the 163-hectare airport site.
Our airport has extensive contiguous nutrient-poor rough pastures. This species-rich grassland with numerous low-nutrient indicators and a rich insect fauna is unique in the region. In addition, the smooth transition from dry to damp and from higher to lower growing sites is a special feature.
“The species spectrum ranges from nutrient-poor grassland species, in which erect grass (Bromus erectus) and quaking grass (Briza media) dominate in some areas, to more demanding species of dry sage-smooth oat meadows such as meadow bellflower (Campanula patula) or marguerite (Leucanthemum vulgare), to species of the moister foxtail meadows such as cuckoo flower (Lychnis flos-cuculi) and species of small sedge meadows (Carex pulicaris). The wetter areas of the meadows show transitions to wet meadows with marsh forget-me-not (Myosotis palustris) and endangered species such as Siberian iris (Iris sibirica) and broad-leaved orchid (Dactylorhiza majalis). The range of species is also extended by more demanding ruderal species of lean, dry and warm habitats such as Kidney Vetch (Anthyllis vulneraria), Three-fingered Saxifrage (Saxifraga tridactylites) and others.” says Wilfried Löderbusch, graduate biologist.
There are also several small woodlands, wet meadows with transitions to protected wet meadows and water-bearing ponds on our site. The partially wet woodlands form the spawning habitat of the specially protected species of grass frog (Rana temporaria) and alpine newt (Ichthyosaura alpestris). A plant species on the Baden-Württemberg Red List, the felt sedge (Carex tomentosa), was found in the wet meadows.
In addition, various bird species also feel at home on our grounds, for example the skylark, which is classified as endangered, or the strictly protected lapwing. Reptiles such as the sand lizard and mammals such as the fox are also welcome guests.
In close cooperation with the Markdorf office for landscape ecology, we regularly assess the various habitats and species, protect the diversity and develop concepts for the maintenance and expansion of habitats.
